AXIS Communications recently released their AXIS Camera Companion, one of the easiest and least expensive way to put your toe into the network video surveillance water.
The free AXIS Camera Companion is an very simple way to record 1 to 16 AXIS IP cameras, and is designed for retail, offices, hotels, and the homeowner. The beauty of the system is that it records to micro SD cards inserted into the cameras, eliminating in most cases, the need for a separate recorder. By storing the video on the SD card, you can not only watch the live stream of the video, you can access the recordings remotely.
This makes each camera a smart, independent video recording device! The AXIS Camera Companion records HDTV quality video for very reliable facial identification of people and incidents. Choose to record video clips or snap- shots that can be easily exported. The Internet access is very easy to set up, and includes support for apps for the iPhone, iPad, and Android, which lets you use the AXIS Camera Companion to view video at any time, from anywhere.
The AXIS Camera Companion removes the most common point of failure in a network video surveillance system, where a DVR failure prevents all cameras from being recorded. All of the cameras in an AXIS Camera Companion system record video internally, regardless of the network status.
The free PC client is really only needed during the installation of the cameras. For viewing the live or recorded video, or if you need to export the video after an incident, you can use either the client or a smart phone app can be used.
The AXIS Camera Companion is a future-proof and scalable network video solution that protects your investment. Adding a new cameras to the system is very easy, and your existing analog cameras can be integrated using Axis video encoders. If you want to step up to another IP solution in the future, all of your Axis cameras and encoders can be reused, as well as the network equipment.

Sandisk 32 GB SDHC-card
AXIS Camera Companion records video to SD/SDHC-cards in the network cameras. A 32 GB SD-card can typically store 2-4 weeks of video. More details: Edge storage
- 32 GB SDHC cards from Sandisk with speed class 4 or higher.
See the network camera/video encoder specification for product specific details on supported SD cards.
Network-Attached Storage (NAS)
Iomega® StorCenter™ ix-2
As an alternative to local video recording to an SD/SDHC card , AXIS Camera Companion supports Network-Attached Storage (NAS) recording. This allows cameras without edge storage support to be part of an AXIS Camera Companion system, and record video to the NAS. Naturally, in such a system, the cameras do not become individual recording devices, but will require a network to function.
- Iomega ix-2 for installations up to 4 cameras
- Iomega px-4 for installations up to 16 cameras
Uninterruptible Power Source (UPS)
In locations with unreliable power, a UPS can be a good investment to ensure maximum uptime. This is particularly beneficial for an AXIS Camera Companion system that uses Power over Ethernet to power its cameras over the network, since a single UPS can then be used to secure not only the network equipment but also all the cameras in the system – a clear advantage over analog DVR-based systems.
A Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch provides power to cameras over the network, removing the need for separate power cables.
- Netgear GS108P – 4 PoE ports and 4 LAN ports
- Netgear FS116P – 8 PoE ports and 8 LAN ports
A router is typically used whenever wireless cameras are used, wireless local access is required or when remote access is enabled. Routers with Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) simplifies installation of Axis’ wireless cameras. Routers with UPnP simplify the setup of remote access to a system.
