Now you can add an optional "AA" battery field charger that will charge your pen while you are away from electricity. Just insert a "AA" battery in the charger, hook up the cable, and charge for 3 hours.

We charged the Upgraded Video Spy Pen for 3 hours, it up and let it run until it the battery died. With the larger video and higher frame rate, you are going to get about 70-90 minutes of recording now. It records in 30 minute segments, so you will have 3 files, and the battery will die.

In our test, the Upgraded DVR Spy Pen took 3 movies; the first one was 30 minutes at 29MB, the second video was 30 minutes exactly for 37MB, and the last one was 13 minutes for 30MB for a total of 96MB for 73 minutes. That's 1.31MB per minute.

Even though the manufacturer says the software records at 30 fps, it only plays back in the 14-22fps rate. And the audio is now improved and very clear; no more of those annoying murps ever few seconds.

If you have an Apple computer the Upgraded Spy Pen Digital Video Recorder works fine with Quicktime.

We can't get the 3gp format to play correctly in Windows Media Player; you only get audo. If you have a PC, you can download a freeware program called VLC Media Player, or KM Player.

The DVR Spy Pen now records in 3gp, which pops right up on an Apple computer. We tested it on OS X 10.5.X & 10.4.X, and it shows up like a flash drive. In the DCIM folder, is a 100media folder, where the files are. Drag the files to the desktop & double click to play. Nice!

However, on Windows XP, it shows up as a .3gp file, it won't launch it with Windows Media Player; we get a warning dialogue box. Not sure what will happen on a Vista machine, and if anyone can drop us a line through the contact box above who is running Vista and got this to work, let us know.

DVR Spy Pen Operation Instructions:

In order to use the DVR spy pen, you will need to charge the digital video spy pen 3 hours, then it's ready to use.

To use it, press the top button for a second, and you will see the red light on the back side of the clip light up. The DVR pen is on & ready for action. It should AUTOMATICALLY start recording in about 2 seconds, and flash red blinks ever few seconds.

To stop the recording, press the top button once, and it will turn solid red, which means it has saved the video and is now back in stand-by mode. You can either start recording again by pushing the button, and it will start blinking 2x ever few seconds to show it's recording. Press it again to stop the recording and it turns green, then red.

To switch to photograph mode, unscrew the bottom 1/2 and there is a switch next to the USB port on the top of the pen. Slide it the other way and you can take photographs with the pen by pushing the top button once & holding the pen still. It takes a second or two, so keep the pen steady while you film. Keep taking pictures until you are finished. When you are done, make sure to turn the switch back to the other side, because the pen will not work on your computer if you have the switch on Photo mode. The computer will not recognize it and you will think it's defective, when it's not.

To turn off the DVR Pen, hold the button down until the red light goes off about 2-3 seconds.

If you ever have any problems and it appears "Stuck" do a hard reset. Open a small paper clip or similar sized piece of metal, or a tack, and insert it gently, straight in the hole below the status light. When you make contact, push lightly and you will reset the pen. Try turning it on and see if it starts recording video.

Setting The Time/Date On The Upgraded Spy Pen Digital Video Recorder

1. Open a text file in Notepad on a PC, or Text Edit on a Mac.
2. Type your date in the following format: 20091204133800. Year, month, day, hour, minute, seconds, so this example would be December 4th, 2009 @ 1:38 pm.
3. Save the file to your desktop as time.txt to your desktop.
4. Drag the file over to the root of the pen. It shows up as a removable drive on your desktop. Double click to open it up, and drag it over. If there is a folder called DCIM, do not put it in there, put it next to it.
5. Eject the drive. On the Mac, right click on the icon on the desktop to eject. On a PC, go to the lower right tray and click on the green arrow, it will say, Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device, and click on that.
6. Turn the pen on & record a video. It should now have the correct time & date & the text file should not be on the drive. If it is, eject the drive, and remove it from the computer. Turn it on & off, then turn on again and record a video. If the text file is gone, it took.
