Recently, people say they are having problems setting the motion setting for the Starnex MicroEye CamBall. This FAQ will attempt to help you set up the CamBall for motion detection, and other questions. This is only information for the models SC-20 & SC-21, which have been discontinued.
Here is some basic background on the CamBall;
Q: The CamBall is always going off throughout the day, even though we set it up on motion detection.
A: This is a very advanced device, and the motion detection can be set off by the slightest variation, or change in lighting if the sun is shining in the room. On motion detection mode, the Cam ball takes one still shot every three seconds and compares it with the previous shot. If there is any difference between the two shots, Camball recognize it as a motion and start to record for 2 minutes. If there is no motion during the 2 minutes, Cam Ball goes to sleep. While it sleeps, the still shots are taken every three seconds.
So you can test if the motion detection is working by setting it up as describe below and put it in a dark closed for 2-3 hours. After that pull out the camball and plug it in the computer. If you see several 2 minute videos of dark, you know the motion detection is working fine. You can see 2 minute video even if there has been no motion at all during the time you left CamBall on motion detection mode.
On the other hand, the Camball is programmed for straight recording to create one video file every hour, or in 20MB size (300MB size when you record on external memory). That's for preventing O/W function from erasing the whole data at once; that is, O/W function erases the oldest file first and then the next oldest.
The Camball that is set on motion detection mode recognizes the start of new file as a motion. At that point Caball wakes up to start recording for 2 minutes. If there is no motion detected during the 2 minutes, Camball goes to sleep until the start of another new file (If there is no motion during the time).
Therefor if you have left the CamBall on motion detection for 5 hours, you can see five 2 minute files on your video folder.
Q: How do I set up the Camball for motion detection? A: This is the short version. To set up the Camball correctly on the motion detection mode, please follow the guide below in numerical order. Refer to the Camball quick start guide for location of the buttons:
Turn the CamBall on by pressing center button 2 seconds after charging for 3 hours. It will flash 2x and the LEDs of MEM, BAT, O/W are supposed to be Green.
Adjust the P/S button to Red (Right Arrow)
Adjust the R/T button to Green (Left Arrow)
Adjust the REC button to Green/Red (Top Arrow)
That's it; just set it down and now it's in Motion Detection mode. You can make REC Red or make REC Green depending if you want audio or not.
This is the long version:
Q: How can I set my Camball on Motion Detection mode?
RED (Detection of Video and Audio) or GREEN (Detection of Video only)
Choose one depending upon your purpose of using Camball.
P/S LED Color
VIDEO
AUDIO
RED
RECORDS VIDEO ONLY WHEN MOTION DETECTED
RECORDS AUDIO ONLY WHILE VIDEO BEING RECORDED.
GREEN
RECORDS VIDEO ONLY WHEN MOTION DETECTED
CONTINUOUSLY RECORDS AUDIO WHETHER OR NOT VIDEO BEING RECORDED
OFF
CONTINUOUSLY RECORDS VIDEO
CONTINUOUSLY RECORDS AUDIO
2. R/T LED: GREEN (Security Recording Type)
3. REC LED: GREEN/RED (Video + Audio Recording)
Please note that when you set P/S LED GREEN, your Camball doesn’t go to sleep because it is programmed to normally(continuously) record sound (whether or not there is any noise) even though there is no motion detected. At this GREEN setting, actually you can save memory capacity, but not power.
And when you set P/S LED RED, your Camball scans for motion every two seconds and , if there is a motion detected, it records for two minutes. If there is a continious motion, your Camball doesn’t go to sleep. However when no motion is detected by scanning, your Camball is actually sleeping.
At this RED setting, you can save both memory capacity and power. Please remember, though, that you cannot record audio when no motion is detected, because your Camball goes to sleep then.
What happens if you set REC LED RED? Your Camball is set to record only video, no audio. It means that there is no difference between your setting of P/S LED at RED and at GREEN. That means your Camball may not be able to meet your needs.
What happens if you set REC LED GREEN? Actually no motion detection function. Camball works like a voice recorder. That’s why we recommend you to set REC LED RED/GREEN for motion detection recording.
Q: How can I know whether my Camball is fully charged? A: While your Camball is being charged, green/red LED lights of four indicators are on. However they don't turn off even if your Camball is fully charged. But Camball is not overcharged. When you charge Camball for the first time, you need to wait for 2 hours. You can see the status of battery by the color of LED light of BAT indicator.
Q: Why does the CamBall stop recording while it is being charged through an adapter? A: If you are charging the CamBall through an general adapter made by other companies, the Camball will stop recording until it is un-plugged; they don't have the internal circuitry to support the CamBall. If you want to record continously while the CamBall is being charged, please use our CamBall 110V adapter, SG95, which is customized for continous recording while Camball is being charged.
Q: How can I download the latest version of Firmware? A: You can download it just one time at our website from our Camball Update. Afterwards, when there is any higher version released, our server will automatically notify it to you when you plug your Camball into your PC, and will ask you if you want to upgrade it.
Just click "Yes". That's it. Your Camball will be automatically upgraded in a second. And, all new updates will be performed when you open the CamBall manager and if there is a new update, it will automatically let you know. It's up to 1.95 now...
Q: How do I turn off the Camball lights for night recording? A: Please open the Camball Manager software, and click < Others>. You can see LED Display Time. You can change it from "Always On" to " 5 Seconds," and it will turn off after 5 seconds. Download the CamBall users manual here...

Hello I have a small problem.
I fit my Camball to the USB provided but my computer does not recognise any device has been connected, so I try with my other equipment which it detects with no problem. Also when I turn on and off I just get the light staying on for 5 seconds then it is off again. I have just purchased this, is there something wrong with it?
