There is no update needed for any of the current DVR Spy Pens. This update was for people who wanted to hook up an external battery and let it record longer. It is not needed for general use and there is nothing available now to download.

This is the firmware & time/date stamp update for the OLD AND DISCONTINUED Spy Pen Digital Video Recorder We finally tried the update the manufacturer sent us and they were
incorrect as everyone has pointed out, there are not 3 drives when you
plug it in, there is only one drive. Something got lost in
translation...
So now we know how to make the update work, and get the time & date
to work, though you set the time and date for the current date, then
you use the pen. It will time & date stamp the video with green
time & date in the top left, very small, though it won't
automatically update for future days.
You will have to manually update the time & date. Also, once you do
this, the time & date are stuck there and we don't know how to get
rid of it. So we will post that after they reply.
We deleted any software updates. It was only for people that connected larger batteries, it was not a virus, though now there is nothing to download.

This is how to install the software for the time and date stamp:
This adds a function which the DVR Pen's time (year-mounth-date hour:minute:second) will be
recorded in the recorded files,and will be shown when playback in the top left corner in small green letters.
You will need to change this every time you want to use this as the pen has no internal clock and you need to change it to the current date as follows.
1. Open the file called userconfig.txt
2. Change the time settings correctly as follows to your current time an date:2008-09-20 10:08
3. Save the .txt file as userconfig.txt
4. Connect the DVR Pen as outlined in #1 above with the USB cable.
5. Copy the userconfig.txt to the root of the DVR Pens directory, with the other files above.
4. Go to the bottom right icon tray and find the green arrow that will let you Safely Remove Hardware. Click on it and wait until it says it is ok to remove the hardware.
5. Disconnect the Pen DVR from the PC, and then power off the DVR Pen, and then power on.
now the time will always be there.

Note, there are so many pens that you have to play with the format until you find one that works. Some require a ":" between the numbers, some a "-", and others nothing. Head over to our forum to discuss this further...

We don't know what to tell you. The files show up when you plug it in the PC. If not, try a hard reset by sticking a paper clip in the hole below the lights, or return to the company you bought it from.

It allows you to connect it to a battery to record longer than 2 hours. Some people take them apart and use the insides and it would not record to fill the memory. Unless you want to open it up and use connect it to a power supply, there is no need to update it, unless you want to do the date/time stamp.

I purchased one and it worked fine, for awhile that is, before the on & off switch fell apart.
I sent it back and the one I have now won't olay video, I get audio OK, but no video.
The person I bought it from gave me this web site,
baofengyingyin, but it's in Chinese, and i don't know how to getr the English version.
Don't know why I would need this when the first one played OK.
Can anyone out there plese help me?

When I first got the camera I charged it, recorded and plugged into computer. Virus software deleted movie.exe off of the disk. Now it does not work at all. I plug it in to the computer and no files pop up in the folder. Any ideas?

Our apologies for not checking this in a while and realizing there is some confusion on settng the time/date on the DVR Pen.
When you set the time/date, it is only for that specific recording. You need to adjust it every time. There is no internal battery like a computer that updates the time; it's just for that moment, as you are just adjusting a text file with the date that the pen reads.
Unless you need it for law enforcement or recording a party, don't set the time & date, as it will be there forever and I don't believe you can remove it.

FYI guys, many people sell this pen, and we guarantee for one year that we will replace any defective pen. You have to buy it from us.
Many people contact us to try and exchange it, and unless we sold it to you, you need to go to the people you sold it to, which are sometimes out of business. Or they had only a 30 day warranty, and if the pen falls apart, the are SOL.
We won't send you to some Chinese website for support; you send it back and we send you a new one; end of story.

I made what exactly say above, I copy the update files, I followed the instruction... the update was not done and I lost the titles at all!!! Now I am trying to put them again, I am copying the userconfig.txt file, it is reading it and delete it but the result... again no titles!!

Try turing it on before you plug it in. You might need to do a hard reset by using a paper clip in the small hole under the light and pushing lightly to "reset it". Hope that helps.

Hi,
A friend recently got an email to download a file called BaoFeng_exe from File front site http://files.filefront.com/BaoFengexe/;8229577;/fileinfo.html.
I was told to just copy it over to the pen Root directory.
However I tried to install it on my PC and the installation wizard screen Showed "Welcome to BaoFeng STorm Codec install. Exactly what is Storm Codec (is it safe) So I stopped it there and did not worry to continue, as the Avi files from my Spypen plays very well in VLC but not at all in Window Media Player 9.
Also What I would like to know is there a Program where u can increase the Frame rate from 15Fps to 30fps and also increase the resolution from 340x288 to 640x480.? As my pen seems to actually record at 12Fps. I paid US_$110 and dont want to spend any more $$$, since I was told that there is a pen that records 30fps and 640x480 Resolution.

There is no reason to do any of this guys, this guy is wasting his time; the DVR Pen works fine out of the box. There is no pen that is doing 30 fps; it's 15 and that's it and nothing will change it; that person is a liar who says that. You just need VideoLan or VCLan to view it; free open source software and the link is on the product page. If you can get it to work with other programs, that's great, though it won't work with Windows Media Player or any Apple computer.

Do a hard reset by sticking a small paper clip in the hole below the light and press light to "reset" the pen. It should work fine after that.

My pen is filming ok but, the soundrecording is terrible, i have to scream into the pen to hear the sound and yet it sounds like im under water. Does it need special soundcodec and where is the mic located on the pen?

As we say in the product description, the sound is metallic and robotic. It's the nature of the beast, you are squeezing a camera, DVR, battery, and memory in something a couple inches long. The PI Camstick has better audio, though it's not as covert.

You can only watch the video in Video Lan or similar video player. If you can't get it to work, you have to contact them. The first generation is just .avi files, the 2nd generation is 3gp.

My DVR Pen doesn't record anything. I push the button, the blue light shines. Then I stop and plug the pen into the pc usb port but there's nothing inside. My pen is empty: no software, no files? Maybe I have to install something (software or firmware) in the root directory of the pen? When I bought the pen (the first time I connected it to my pc) the antivirus detected some trojan horses (maybe the seller tried the pen on an infected pc). The antivirus deleted some files: maybe they was part o the pen firmware? How I can restore them?

changed the property button in movie section to see hideen and archive file.now my compeuter is not detecting the drive & iam unable to restore it to earlier position and pen blue lighy is continuously on and not changing at all and even i cannot even shut the light by presssing the button .Can any one help me

If you people would read the article, it would answer your questions.
There is no need to update the firmware, it's only if you want to hook it to an external power supply. Our advice? DON'T UPDATE THE FIRMWARE, THERE IS NO REASON TO, IT WON'T HELP YOU IN ANY WAY.
All you need to worry about is setting the time & date. If you don't want it, don't enable it.

Play around for a while...
Got some tricks :
1. Please always use "safely remove USB device", unless u want to corrupt the Filesystem. the LED will turn blinking blue when it is safe to be unplug.
2. press and hold the button, then connect it to the USB. It will give you the "3 Drive Mode". BE CAREFUL with this mode. You have to "safely remove" (like No.1) to unplug it.
3. use userconfig.txt for changing the time like instructed above. and make sure "press return" at the end of the line.
4. I think systime.txt is to turn on time stamp. still can not figure out this one yet

in order for your pen to show 3 drives you have to hold the power button while you plug it into the usb port. after plugging it in release the button and 3 drives should appear after a brief moment.

I wanted to use an external power supply and thus updated the firmware per your instructions. I had the same problem as some other people after the update...USB Drive no longer seen by PC..Yellow light stuck on...no blue light...reset does not help...It worked perfectly before the update.
Does this mean I need to return the pen for reloading the firmware somehow as the drive is no longer accessible?..or is there some other way to revive it myself?

Why does my cam stop recording in a few minutes? I want to record continously until the battery dies out not for a few mins. Admin: As we post on the product page, it won't work with a Mac in any way, shape or form. You need a PC. If you can somehow get it o a flash drive, you can play it on a Mac. Maybe the only way is to give it back to "Deals Direct" where I bought it from and tell them to shove it up their chinese arse. As I see how many people has problem with this gadget and the manufacturer and supplyers couldn't give a shit.

Admin: We do care and give you a 1 year warranty. The problem appears you are trying to make this work in Windows media player & it won't. You need to download the freeware program called VLC Media player from VLC lan. It will play your movies perfectly. Windows Media player won't recognize it. Please let us know how that goes...

Admin: The only think you need is VLC Media player to play the video. It's free, search for it and that will play the movies, otherwise you don't need anything else.

I have a problem!
I bought a spy pen mp-900 with 4Gb 640x480 resolution.
When I turn on (hold down 5sec the switch button) the led will yellows, and then it's recording.When I push the switch again 1sec, then the led change blue, and i think that doesn't recording. :S
And other problem the date/time setting. I create the userconfig.txt file, with this data: "2009-03-31 12:00:00" ,and I copy my pen root folder, and safely remove, and it's automaticaly power off. I turn on and record something then turn off and connect to my PC. The userconfig.txt wasn't hide and the time wasn't change... :(

When I first got my pen I charged it up. All it ever does is when I hit the power button, the light just shines yellow and blue at the same time. But as soon as I let go of the button, the light turns off. The same thing happens when it's plugged into the USB or the wall charger... the light shines yellow and blue while it's plugged in. Also, my computer has never recognized the device when I plugged it into my computer... any ideas? Is it just a bad one?

Ok, I left it on the charger over night and it finally charged all the way and JUST the yellow light was shining. But now the blue light or yellow light won't come on when I hit the Power button. You only need to charge 3 hours. Don't charge for more. Try a hard reset by sticking a paper clip in the small hole & if you got if from us, you need to contact us for any warranty work.

Hello. I found the way to see the 3 drives of the pen. All you have to do is pressing the power button while you plug in the USB cable. Then you will see the 3 drives.
However I dont know what to do with the other 2 drives. I just wanted to set the right hour to my pen so I used only the userconfig.txt that I copied at the root drive that the videos are stored. Thank you :)

I cannot get the files to delete from my pen. I have deleted them several times yet each time I plug the pne back into my computer all of the files are there again.

On a Mac, you need to delete the trash, after you put it in the trash. With a PC, you just right click to delete. If you are having problems & you got it form us, let us know...

Some pens take photo's, and you need to read the manual that came with it.

You need to charge it for 3 hours first. If it won't hold a charge and you got it from us, contact us to replace it within the 1 year warranty.

60-80 minutes is all you get, make sure you charge for 3 hours.

Hi,
For Every one,
Reset your Device then press the Power button from the top of device and then after one second of pressing, keep pressing and plug it to the USB until it detect the device and wait for an about 30 seconds... it will show 3 Drives containing system files and a configuration files from there you can update the Firmware but be Extra careful that changing these files may ruin the device programming forever.
I changed the two files (AK##) and it works perfectly and I got rid of the Time Stamp but even after updating the time first time so now I can check the prosperities of videos and read the time taken.
Looking now for Further programming for these devices since I ruined 2 so far.. ;-)
Got Money.. Go for it.

I found out that there a difference between some devices one of them are Slow and it records 12FPS only and the other one records 15FPS and fast, the fast one light first the yellow then the blue when it start
but the slow one light both then yellow then Blue while starting recording.
I failed to update the Fast device but I didn't have chance to try more because I ruined it when I pulled the device out from its cover.
the IC that have its pins all over its base got its pins some loose so it started behave strangely stopping and starting suddenly and turn off as fast as I lift my finger off the power button.
hope that will help a bit.

Other problem , when i charge the MP9 the yelow light never stop blinking.In user manual tell abaut the charging is over when the light "stopp blinking " .Is this malfunction of charger system or is not full charged because of Po.Li-Ion battery ?The maximum record time after i charge over night was 53 minute .User manual say abaut 110-130 minutes.Ias the battery damaged .The Pen Cam is brand new now is in tryout period to see if working good .

I purchased the spy pen camra on 19th May. As per the manual i tried to operate it. Some times it will show only continuous yelow light and i have to reset using a pin. Hope using a pin to reset would be OK? Major thing is i am not finding English version of the driver softwasre in the web download. What to do sto get the English version of driver software required for the computer. Pl.let me know.

Date/time problem fix - worked fine to me ( sorry to say, but this feature is NOT GOOD )
Write in the root of the pen the file userconfig.txt with the text inside 2009-01-0100:00:00
Don't forget the enter at the end of line and don't use space between the date and the time!
Turn off the pen, remove from pc, turn on, turn off and on again - YES ... 2 times - only one time don't worked to me
When it work the cam delete the original file userconfig.txt
It's boring, but ALWAYS back up that txt file before each test or you lost it forever. (my backup is "Copy of userconfig.txt")
Record some video to test the new date/time setup
Another test here:
0000-00-0000:00:00 this set to 1980-01-0100:00:00 - looks like old DOS starting date and work fine too.
My cam comes in FAT32 and I never format it ( not FAT like some comment in earlier messages )
There is no clock in the cam, so.. we need to reset the time when needed - or forget it at 1980 like I do now
To format any USB, I use the Hewlett-Packard USB format program HPUSBFW.EXE - free one, seek in google

I cannot set the date & time on my 4Gb spy pen. Have tried getsystime.exe but it doesn't work. My pen did not come with a userconfig.txt file, nor can I find it on my home pc (windows xp). Same goes for systemtime.txt, can't find it.

If you are to adjust date and time, i found userconfig.txt file should have only date but time should be 00:00:00 else it goes back to 1980 so the format should be 2009-06-0500:00:00 with enter key at the end. I tried 2009-06-0518:35:00 but all goes to 1980 mid night only. So finally decided to wakeup and set it in the mid night.

Hi,
my pen is not recognized by Win XP when i connect it to the PC via USB. After connection to the USB the light on the pen is blue for a short time then it turns to yellow and stays on (not blinking/flickering) as long as the pen is connected to the USB. Other USB devices are recognized instantly, but the pen is not.
Any solutions at hand ?

I know this is a FAQ but I have to let people know if your having a problem with the videos showing up on your computer, reformat the pen by going to my computer, right click the usb drive for the pen, and the format option should be there. also the realone player works great for playing video back. Hope this saves somebody the headache it caused me.

If the pen is not working for you, try to stick a thin paper clip end into the hole below the status light to reset the pen.

The 3gp format won't show up in Windows Media Player, unless it's been upgraded.

Did you charge it for 3 hours? Try plugging it right in the PC to charge as sometimes the cable or adapter is defective. It sounds like you are not charging it. PLEASE CONTACT US USING THE CONTACT FORM IF YOU NEED HELP. THIS IS NOT A HELP FORUM.

I have the 8GB SAS Ultimate Spy Pen which I bought from eBay. I had the RESET TIME AND DATE issue too. After reading this forum, I located my userconfig file, but it was named "settime.txt", so I created a new .txt file with same name on my desktop, overwritten the original file on the USB, unplugged the USB safely, turned USB off, back on, recorded something, off, uploaded the file and VOILA! it shows 2009-11-05 in the time i intended! great! THanks!

Because you are moving the pen when you record. Set it in a cup and record videos and see if there is any difference.

I really don't understand your question. In the PC, forget about the lights. Does it show up as a removable drive? If so, look in there for your movies or contact us for more info.

You need to provide more info. Is it recognized as a removable drive? Is it a Mac or PC? What pen did you get & what size is video? All these things have a factor. Please provide more info for us to help you. For those who get sound but no video, or can only take photos but not video etc. Look at USB connector plug. (The actual connector) You will see a tiny switch, a MODE switch, change mode from photo (image) to video (movie). If it does not quite switch over you may only get sound but no video. Ensure it is correctly positioned for photo or video. Hope this is Ok for you guys.

That is one possibility, you are in audio only mode and not video mode. Some have a switch. However, if it's in Windows Media player, you need to either try KM Player or VLC Media player as WMP does not recognize all the variations of the video types.

Hi all I have the MP900 2gb with VGA resolution I found the way to change the date for my version is put userconfig.txt in the main directory with the date and time in this format 2009-12-30:14:54:00 no spaces after or before and no presses of the return key. then just unplug and start recording. that's it!

i have an 8gb camera and it was working well. i noticed that the yellow and blue lights were coming on, and then going out in a short while. when i checked , nothing was being recorded. I'v got the 4 gb 640 480 30 fps pen.It does not show as a remuvable drive at all.If I put it in the usb port the yellow and blue lights up.But nothing shows in explore.I got a message there is no driver fot the device.When I select the update the driver it say's there is no new driver.If I remuve the pen from the usb port boath lights go off.Did I corrupt it because I did not use the safely remuve drive option?Can it be fixed.Is there a way I can at least use it as a 4gb memory stick?Anyone help please!!

The pen was working ok, at one point it stopped working: the yellow light just doesn't go off unless I reset it, but it is no longer recognized either by PC or mac (it just doesn't appear as a removable drive of volume) and therefore I cannot even format it. please advice

Not used the pen in some months - I decided to try again, but it just seems to dead.
When I press the button on top - the yellow light just stays on. I press the reset pin, and it goes off, and when I press the button, the yellow light comes on again - and nothing I do changes it to blue or off. I even tried holding the button down for several seconds.
If I press the reset button, and charge (I aways charge on my PC), the yellow light comes on solid, and stays on even if I remove it from the USB.
So, is my pen borked? or can it be fixed

I have the MP9 Spy Pen 320 x 240 , and in order to get a correct time and date I do like like that:
1*Creat an empty .txt file with the name 'Userconfig.txt' on your desktop
2* put this text in the file it's tha date and the time:
2009-03-10:19:30:00
3*Record a very small video and never delete it, it will be a root-headword for your clock
Voilā !!! now you can enjoy it, it will be allways right :-)

My pen is empty: no software, no files? Maybe I have to install something (software or firmware) in the root directory of the pen? When I bought the pen (the first time I connected it to my pc) the antivirus detected some trojan horses (maybe the seller tried the pen on an infected pc). The antivirus deleted some files: maybe they was part o the pen firmware? How I can restore them
