Do you need a license to install surveillance cameras in Texas?

Texas Boy asked:

Does anyone know if you need a license from the state to install surveillance cameras in Texas? I have heard you need a low voltage license or a security system license but can’t find anything at the state level stating this. If anyone knows for certain I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

idk, i don’t think they would really care. They have much better things to do, especially since u are using it for your own security, not a business

If you are installing them in your own home or business you don’t need any license. You might need a permit from the city you live in, can’t advise you on that but you can call city works department and find out, if your out in the county, knock yourself out.

If you want to do it as a business you have to be licensed. Go to the Texas Department of Public Safety website, you will find it under the links for private investigators and alarm installers.

You need a license to install alarm or security systems systems in Texas. You can install a system in your own home or business without a license unless it notifies the police when activated. This includes cameras. When I was a kid a buddy and I sold cheap alarms for about a year before we learned we had to be licensed – in Texas. Back then you went to Austin and took an easy test and gave them some money. Nowadays they have 4 or 5 classes of security licenses depending on what services you offer. I found the DPS website for you – Good Luck.

Texas largest security camera school is the Walls Unit in Huntsville. The institution is funded by the state of Texas. Trainees learn from experts who have years of the practical knowledge.

P.S. Students of the Walls Unit are unable to receive a security system license.
